Have you ever watched on TV as the numbers were drawn for a lottery? Typically, several clear plastic boxes are shown with ping-pong balls being blown around inside by a fan. In your initial post to the discussion, discuss how well these bouncing balls in a box mimic the conditions set forth in the kinetic theory.

Answer #1

The condition of the pingpong balls seem to mimic that of kinetic theroy of gases

  • The ping pong balls constant bombardment of the walls causes some force to act on the wall which inturn causes a pressure .This is simillar to how molecules constantly bombard the walls of the container in thich the gas is kept
  • The fan is kike the internal energy of the gas
  • The speed of the ping pong balls and the their distance from each other makes the gravitational and other intreactions fairly neglectable like that of gas molecules
  • The speed of the molecules depends on the fan like how the kinetic energy depends on tenperature
