This lab has short conceptual questions. While answering these questions, please provide your theory (explanation) and support these theories by respective formulas if needed.

  1. Suppose an object moves along a horizontal line. A statement about the object motion says that the object accelerates in the direction west.
  1. Can you imply the direction of the object’s motion from this statement?
  2. Can you imply that the object is speeding up?
  1. Suppose that there is a mass M in the space. Is there a force of gravity at the location P near the mass? Support your answer.

Answer #1

1. No, we cannot imply the direction of the object's motion because if a body is moving towards north or south or west an have acceleration towards west.

2. This statement would have been right either if the body was initially at rest or moving towards the west direction. But here no information is given about initial conditions hence the given statement is not true.

Near the mass, there is certainly gravitational field due to mass M itself but for force of gravity, there has to be an another mass hence the given statement is not true.
