Communication satellites appear to “hover” over one point on the earth’s equator. A satellite that appears to remain stationary as the earth rotates is said to be in a geostationary orbit. Use concepts of centripetal force balanced by the gravitational force and do the following: (a) Derive an expression for the radius of the orbit of such a geostationary satellite (Time Period T = 8.64 *10^4 s ). (b) Then, calculate the height of such a satellite above earth’s surface (assume Radius of earth is 6370 km).
