A spring 1.7 m long with force constant 525 N/m is hung from the ceiling of an elevator, and a block of mass 15 kg is attached to the bottom of the spring.

(a) By how much is the spring stretched when the block is slowly lowered to its equilibrium point?

(b) Referring to your answer in Part (a), is the block below or above its equilibrium position?

(c) If the elevator subsequently accelerates upward at 2.00 m/s2, what is the position of the block, taking the equilibrium position found in part (a) as y = 0 and upwards as the positive y-direction.

(d) If the elevator cable snaps during the acceleration, the block will be at rest relative to the elevator. What is the amplitude of its motion then relative to its unstretch position?

An ideal spring hangs from the ceiling. A 2.15 kg mass is hung from the spring, stretching the spring a distance d = 0.0905 m from its original length when it reaches equilibrium. The mass is then lifted up a distance L = 0.0225 m from the equilibrium position and released. What is the kinetic energy of the mass at the instant it passes back through the equilibrium position?

A spring is hung from the ceiling, and has a rest length of 43.0 cm. A block (mass = 0.374 kg) is attached to the spring. When we slowly let the mass down (being careful to not let it start oscillating), the spring stretches to a length of 58.4 cm. We then pull the mass down 3.0 cm below this position and let it go to begin oscillating. Assume the mass of the spring is negligible. a) What is the...

A spring with spring constant 32 N/m is attached to the ceiling, and a 4.7-cm-diameter, 1.2 kg metal cylinder is attached to its lower end. The cylinder is held so that the spring is neither stretched nor compressed, then a tank of water is placed underneath with the surface of the water just touching the bottom of the cylinder. When released, the cylinder will oscillate a few times but, damped by the water, quickly reach an equilibrium position. When in...
