A trip has four stages. The lengths of these stages were reported as follows: Stage #1= 2.33 km, Stage #2 = 1.375, Stage #3 = 0.2 km, Stage #4 = 1.7 km. How should one report the total length to the correct number of significant figures?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A trip has been completed by 4 stages. Suppose First distance is a, second distance is b, third distance is c, fourth distance is d, then according to statistics the total distance will be root square of the distances.

Total distance covered=

Here, 1st distance=2.33 km, 2nd distance=1.375 km, 3rd distance=0.2 km, 4th distance=1.7 km

Total distance covered by the trip= km= km

= km =3.201 km

At the 2nd stage it has completed 3 decimal significant value distance (=1.375 km), then the answer should be three decimal significant value.

The total length should be reported as=3.201 km
