Two small stereo speakers are 2 m apart and act as a double slit interference experiment with sound waves. If the opposite wall of the room is 6 m away and the sound frequency is 2 kHz, what is the distance between the two interference maxima nearest the center of the wall? Assume the speakers act as point sources of sound.

Answer #1

Solution:

Let the distance between two maxima nearest the centre maxima is Y. It is the distance between first order maxima on both the side of central maxima and given by

(1)

Where, is the distance between two consecutive maxima and given by

(2)

Where,

D= distance between sounds and frant wall

d= distance between sounds

f= frequency of sounds waves

v= velocity of sound waves

Putting equation (2) in (1), we get

(3)

Given that:

Putting all valuese in equation (3), we find the distance between two maxima nearest to the central maxima as

You are doing a double slit experiment with light. One slit is wider than the other, so one of the waves is stronger. There is never exact cancellation, or complete destructive interference.
