A light string is wrapped around a solid cylinder and a 300 g mass hangs from the free end of the string, as shown. When released, the mass falls a distance 54 cm in 3.0 s.

a. Draw free-body diagrams for the block and the cylinder.

b. Calculate the tension in the string.

c. Calculate the mass of the cylinder

Answer #1

Given data

mass = 300 g = 0.3 kg

distance , d = 54 cm = 0.54 m

time, t = 3 sec

b)

using d = ut + 0.5 at^2
0.54 = 0 + 0.5* a * 3^2

0.54 = 4.5* a
a = 0.12 m/s2

on mass :

mg - T = ma

0.3g - T = 0.3a
T   = 0.3 ( g - a)

     = 0.3 ( 9.8 - 0.12)

    = 2.904 N

c) on pulley :
torque ( rXF) = I x α

and α = a/r

I = 0.5mr^2

So
T*r = ( 0.5*mr^2 ) * a/r
T = 0.5*m*a
2.904 = m (0.5*0.12)
m = 48.4 kg

A light, nonstretching cable is wrapped around a solid cylinder with mass 88 kg and radius 0.19 m. The cylinder rotates with negligible friction about a stationary horizontal axis. We attach the free end of the cable to a block of mass 48 kg, and release the block from rest at a distance 3.9 m above the floor. A massless string is wound around a solid cylinder that has a radius of 0.27 m and a mass of 28.8 kg. The free end of the string is tied to a block of mass 4 kg which hangs straight down. At t=0, the cylinder is allowed to spin about an axis through its center and the block falls, unwinding the string. Assume that the cylinder spins without friction. What is the acceleration of the block?

A yo-yo is made by wrapping a string several times around a solid cylinder with mass M=9kg and Radius=5cm. You hold the end of the string stationary while releasing the cylinder. The string unwinds but does not slip or stretch as the cylinder drops and rotates. 1) Use energy to find the speed in vcm (cm/s) of the centre of mass of the solid cylinder after it has dropped a distance h equal to h=23cm 2) Find the acceleration of...

We wrap a light, flexible cable around a solid cylinder with mass 0.95 kg and radius 0.23 m . The cylinder rotates with negligible friction about a stationary horizontal axis. We tie the free end of the cable to a block of mass 1.84 kg and release the object with no initial velocity at a distance 1.58 m above the floor. As the block falls, the cable unwinds without stretching or slipping, turning the cylinder. Suppose the falling mass is...

A solid cylinder has a mass of 100 kg and radius 0.225m. The cylinder is attached to a frictionless horizontal axle. A long (light weight) cable is wrapped around the cylinder. Attached to the end of the cable is a 1.50 kg mass. The system is initially stationary. The hanging mass is then released. The mass pulls on the cable as it falls and this causes the cylinder to rotate. a) What is the velocity of the hanging mass after...
