Compare and contrast DC motors and generators. How are they alike? How are they different?
Difference between a DC motor and a generator in terms of EMF: ...
In this case, mechanical torque is produced by consuming the emf. Whereas, in case of DC generator, the mechanical input from prime mover generates emf across the armature to deliver electrical output power.
Mechanically dc motor and dc generator are alike, but from a technical perspective dc, motor and dc generator differ greatly. Though, they both perform their function on direct current supply, direct current motor supplies mechanical power by converting the direct current electrical power whereas dc generator converts mechanical energy into direct current electricity.
During the operation of a DC motor, EMF is created across its terminals using an external source. Whereas, in a DC generator EMF is created across its terminal based on principle of dynamically induced EMF.
So talking in terms of EMF, in DC motor EMF is consumed by the motor coil and utilized to rotate the axle. On the other hand, in DC generator EMF developed across coil is transfered to a load or a battery and consumed by them.

In both d.c motor & d.c generator emf is generated in armature but in generator generated emf is more than terminal voltage & in d.c motor there is emf in armature which is always less than terminal volta
