A 295-kg object and a 595-kg object are separated by 4.30 m.

(a) Find the magnitude of the net gravitational force exerted by these objects on a 44.0-kg object placed midway between them.
___N

(b) At what position (other than an infinitely remote one) can the 44.0-kg object be placed so as to experience a net force of zero from the other two objects?
___m from the 595 kg mass toward the 295 kg mass

Answer #2

here,

mass of object 1 , m1 = 295 kg

mass of object 2 , m2 = 595 kg

sepration between them , r = 4.3 m

a)

m3 = 44 kg

the magnitude of the net gravitational force exerted by these objects , F = G * m2 * m3 /(r/2)^2 - G * m1 * m3 /(r/2)^2

F = 6.67 * 10^-11 * 44 /(4.3/2)^2 * ( 595 - 295)

F = 1.9 * 10^-7 N

b)

let the net force is zero at x m from the 595 kg mass

equating the forces at x

G * m1 * m /(r - x)^2 - G * m2 * m /x^2 = 0

295 /(4.3 - x)^2 = 595 /x^2

solving for x

x = 2.52 m

the net force is zero at 2.52 m from the 595 kg mass towards 295 kg mass
