What a time for Abraham's refrigerator to die?! I finally picked out a new one with a coefficient of performance of 4.35. I haven’t gotten it hooked up to the water line yet (for the ice maker), but I really wanted ice. Time for some physics! I put 1.88 kg of water in the freezer. It had converted completely to ice when I looked again in one hour. The initial temperature of the water was 20.8˚C. The temperature of the ice one hour later was -4.70˚C.

  • (a) How much heat was removed from the water?
  • (b) How much electrical energy (work) does the freezer use during this hour of operation?
  • (c) How much heat is discarded into the room (QH) that houses the freezer?
