Global warming. As the temperature on our planet continues to increase, the ice at the poles will melt and enter the oceans. What effect will this have on the duration of the day?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The answer for this will be based on assumptions so I wil take different assumptions and reach to the ans

1. Assuming the ocean water floats and reach equator and all around the world

In this case the MOI of earth will increase and since the angular momentum of the earth will remain conserved so angular speed of earth will decrease thus increasing the duration of day.

2.Assuming the melted water remain at the poles

In this case MOI will not be effected so duration will not change

1.A feedback mechanism for global warming is that as the planet warms, the polar ice caps melt. The albedo for open water is close to zero (no reflected light), while for ice covered with snow, it is almost one (all light is reflected). If we assume the melting of the ice caps decreases the Earth’s albedo from 0.3 to 0.15, what would the temperature change be due to this effect (use the naked planet model)? Is this an example of...

If global warming occurs over the next century, it is likely that some polar ice will melt and the water will be distributed closer to the equator. How would this change the time for one rotation of the earth (the length of a day)? - It will increase -It will decrease -It will not change

One way to monitor global warming is to measure the average temperature of the ocean. Researchers are doing this by measuring the time it takes sound pulses to travel underwater over large distances. At a depth of 1000 m, where ocean temperatures hold steady near 4∘C, the average sound speed is 1480m/s. It's known from laboratory measurements that the sound speed increases 4.0m/s for every 1.0∘C increase in temperature. In one experiment, where sounds generated near California are detected in...

As consequences of climate change, Earth's ice caps will melt (resulting in the newly liberated water settling closer to the equator and raising sea levels) while its atmosphere expands outward into space. What effect, if any, will this have on the length of a day on Earth, and why?

Is there strong evidence of global warming? Let's consider a small scale example, comparing how temperatures have changed in the US from 1968 to 2008. The daily high temperature reading on January 1 was collected in 1968 and 2008 for 51 randomly selected locations in the continental US. Then the difference between the two readings (temperature in 2008 - temperature in 1968) was calculated for each of the 51 different locations. The average of these 51 values was 1.1 degrees...
