a 7-kg bowling ball strikes a 4.5kg pin. the pin flies forward with a velocity of 2 m/s. the ball continues forward at 4 m/s. what was the original velocity of the ball?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Mass of ball M = 7 kg

mass of pin m = 4.5 kg

original velocity of pinu =0

the original velocity of the ball U = ?

pin velocity after strike v = 2 m/s

ball velocity after strike V = 4 m/s

From law of conservation of momentum,

mu + MU = mv + MV

4.5(0) + 7 U = 4.5(2) +7(4)

             7U = 9 + 28

                  = 37

               U = 5.285 m/s
