kinetic friction acting forward

static friction acting forward

kinetic friction acting backward

static friction acting backward

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Kinetic friction acts when there is relative motion in between the two surfaces which are in contact. In case of static friction there is no such rekative motion. So, static friction acts on the crate.

Since the truck is accelerating in forward direction and there is no sliding of the crate, the crate is moving with the same forward acceleration. This acceleration of the crate is provided by the static friction which acts in forwad direction.

So, Static friction acting forward is correct.

A pickup truck is carrying a 11.0 kgkg toolbox, but the tailgate of the truck is missing, so the box can slide out if it starts moving. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the toolbox and the truck bed are 0.34 and 0.15, respectively. Assume that the truck bed is horizontal. What is the shortest time the truck could take to accelerate from rest to 10.4 m/sm/s without causing the toolbox to slide?
