5 V battery is used to charge a 3 V battery through a 670 ohm resistor. Which of the following is a kvl equation that applies to this situation? The current is assumed to leave the 5 V battery.

5v-IR-3V=0

None

5V-IR-3V=0

5V-iR+3V=0

5V+iR+3V=0

Answer #1

According to kirchoff's voltage law:the sum of changes in potential in a closed loop is 0.

When we move across a battery, we have a positive voltage change if we move from negative terminal to positive terminal and vice versa.

Similarly, when we move across a resistor, we have a potential change of magnitude i*R, where i is current and R is resistance. This change is negative if we move in the direction of current and positive if we move opposite to direction of current.

The situation is as shown in figure.

So,starting at point A, if we move in clockwise direction, we get, 5-IR-3=0.This is the required KVL equation.
