1.)what is the frequency of the microwave whose wavelength is 1.60 cm?

2.) Alpha particles of charge q=+2e and mass m=6.6x10^-27 are emitted from a radioactive source at a speed of 1.6x10^10 m/s. What magnetic field strength would be required to bend them into a circular path of radius r=0.25?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1)    frequency of the microwave   = (3 * 108)/(1.60 * 10-2)

                                                        = 1.875 * 1010 Hz

2) As, Radius = mv/qB

=>    0.25 = (6.6x10-27 * 1.6x1010)/(2 * 1.6 * 10-19 * B)

=> B = 1320 T

thus,    magnetic field strength =   1320 T

A proton (mass mp), a deuteron (m=2mp,Q=e), and an alpha particle (m=4mp,Q=2e) are accelerated by the same potential difference V and then enter a uniform magnetic field B⃗ , where they move in circular paths perpendicular to B⃗ . Determine the radius of the path for the deuteron in terms of that for the proton. Determine the radius of the path for the alpha particle in terms of that for the proton. You have landed a great summer job in the medical school assisting in a research group investigating short-lived radioactive isotopes which might be useful in fighting cancer. Your group is working on a way of transporting α-particles (Helium nuclei) from where they are made to another room where they will collide with other material to form the isotopes. Since the radioactive isotopes are not expected to live very long, it is important to know precisely how much time it will...
