You swing a bat to hit a ball in two different cases. In the first case, the bat collides with a rigid ball that elastically deforms for 0.1 ms while it is in contact with the bat. In the second case, the bat collides with a less rigid ball that elastically deforms for 1.0 ms while it is in contact with the bat. If the balls have the same mass, are thrown with the same speed, and you apply the same constant force to each ball while they are in contact with the bat, which ball will go further?

Group of answer choices

a) The ball that is in contact with the bat for 1.0 ms

b) Not enough information

c) The ball that is in contact with the bat for 0.1 ms.

d) Both balls travel the same distance

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer- (a). The ball that is in contact with the bat for 1.0 ms.

Explanation- Since the force is same so the ball which has more contact time will have more impact due to force.

Impact = change in momentum

Now, the initial velocity of both the balls is same. So, the initial momenta of both the ball will be same.

So, final momentum of the ball having greater impact of force will be greater. So, its final velocity will be greater. So, it will travel more distance.
