Which of the following statements is true about the speeds of the various colors of light in glass?

Violet has the highest speed, red the lowest.

Red has the highest speed, violet the lowest.

Green has the highest speed, red and violet the lowest.

Red and violet have the highest speed, green the lowest.

All colors of light have the same speed in glass.

Answer #1

Red has the highest speed whereas the violet has the lowest speed in glass.

It is so because, violet having the least wavelength, hence bends the maximum , thus possessing the least speed. ( It must be noted that the less the wavelength is , more is the bending of light ).

Also, red having largest wavelength, bends the minimum and hence travels the fastest in the glass.

Which of the following is a correct statement? (1 point) Dispersion of light occures because different colors of light have different refractive indexes. All colors of light have the same refractive index in a given medium. Dispersion is selective transmission of light. The seven different colors of light listed in decreasing order of wavelength are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. As wavelength of light increases, refractive index increases.

A beam of light containing red (660 nm) and violet (410 nm) wavelengths travels from air, through a flat piece of crown glass 1.38 cm thick, and then back to air. (a) If the beam has an angle of incidence of 20.2° in air, determine the angle at which the two colors of light emerge from the crown glass. The index of refraction respectively for red and violet light in crown glass is 1.512 and 1.530. (Enter a number to...

In many transparent materials, dispersion causes different colors (wavelengths) of light to travel at different speeds. This can cause problems in fiber-optic communications systems where pulses of light must travel very long distances in glass. Assuming a fiber is made of silicate crown glass (see figure below), calculate the difference in travel times that two short pulses of light take to travel 11.0 km in the fiber if the first pulse has a wavelength of 700 nm and the second...

As shown in the figure, white light enters a 45-90-45 crown glass prism at the vertical face. Part of this light refracts at the slanted face into the surrounding material and the rest experiences total internal reflection and exits the prism at the horizontal base. The colors of light that emerge from the slanted face may be chosen by varying the index of refraction of the material surrounding the prism. Determine the required index of refraction of the surrounding material...

Green light of wavelength 500 nm passes through a diffraction grating having 10−610−6 m between lines.   How far away from the central bright spot is the next bright spot on a screen 2 m away (in meters)? Suppose the light passing through the diffraction grating is composed of many different wavelengths. Rank the following colors according to the spacing between the bright spots of that color from least to greatest, so the least would have the smallest spacing between maxima....

As you may already know, white light is composed of all the colors of the rainbow. Although we’ve talked about index of refraction of a material as being a single number, in reality, the index of refraction for each material varies slightly depending on the wavelength of light incident on the material. For example, the index of refraction of red light through glass is n = 1.509 while blue light through glass has n = 1.517. Use this information to...
