This lab demonstrates the principle of density.

Part I

You will need a raw egg, table salt and a bowl or pan containing enough water to cover the egg.

Place an egg in a coffee cup or glass containing enough water to cover the egg. What happens? Does the egg sink or float in the water? What does this mean concerning the density of the egg compared to the density of water?

Remove the egg and dissolve three tablespoons of salt in the water. Stir the salt until it completely dissolves. Put the egg back into the water and note whether the egg will float.

Continue to dissolve salt in the water until the egg floats. How much salt does this require?

How does the density of the egg compare to the density of the salty water?

From this activity, which would you expect to have a greater density, tap water or sea water?

Part II

Place a 12 ounce can each of regular and diet Coke, or any carbonated beverage in a large pan or bowl of water. Do both cans sink? Do both cans float? Or does one can sink while the other floats? Which drink is more dense, the diet drink or the regular drink? Why do you think there is a difference in the densities of Diet vs. Regular?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

when we will put egg in water then it will sink because density of egg is more than water

by dissolving salt density of water is increased and by the time when density of water become more than density of egg then egg start floating

amount of salt need to dissolved can be only calculated by experiment because lots of data is required like volume of water, density of egg.,density of salt, type of salt etc

Regular drink will sink but diet drink will float

hence density of regular drink is more than diet drink and this difference is due to added sugar in regular drink
