When A and B are pulled apart, charge transfers between them. We can not say which one is negative or positive but they are oppositely charged since we can not create or destroy charges out of nothing.
Similarly C and D are also oppositely charged.
A repels C shows that they have similar charges (can be both positive or both negative). This leads to the fact that B and D too have similar charges, but opposite polarity to that of A and C. So A attracts D since they are oppositely charged.
