In El Paso, the temperature increases from 10◦C during the night to 32◦C during the day (a change of 22 C◦).

(a) What is the temperature change in Fahrenheit degrees? Is this value greater than, less than, or equal to the temperature change in Celcius degrees? Explain briefly.

(b) What is the temperature change in Kelvin degrees? Is this value greater than, less than, or equal to the temperature change in Celcius degrees? Explain briefly.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

formula used:

if C is temperature in Celsius, F is temperature in farenheit,

then C/5=(F-32)/9

temperature in kelvin=273+C

part a:

given that C=22

==>(F-32)/9=22/5

==>F=9*(22/5)+32=71.6 degree farenheit

in terms of absolute value, F is higher than C.

but in terms of temperature value, both are same with only expressed in different units

part b:

temperature change in kelvin=temperature change in celcius

(as only the scale in kelvin is shifted by 273 , difference remains the same)

hence temperature change in kelvin is 22 K.

You have a glass of water at 83 degrees C. You want to boil it by putting it in a vacuum. What is the smallest percentage of air molecules you would have to remove from the vacuum chamber to allow it to boil? Hint: to boil, the vapor pressure of water must be equal to the external pressure. (You will have to refer to a chart to figure out the vapor pressure of water at 83 degrees). (Remember, atmospheric pressure...

Let the temperature be the explanatory variable and gas consumption the response variable. Assume that the relationship between these two variables is linear.
