A rigid tank having a volume of 0.100 m3 contains helium gas at 170 atm. How many balloons can be inflated by opening the valve at the top of the tank? Each filled balloon is a sphere 0.300 m in diameter at an absolute pressure of 1.25 atm. (Remember that the tank cannot be completely emptied of gas.)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given

   helium gas in a tank of volume V1 = 0.100 m^3, and at pressure P1 = 170 atm

pressure in each ballon is p = 1.25 atm

and each ballon of sphere of diameter d = 0.3 m, radius r = 0.15 m,

   volume of each ballon is V = 4/3 pi *r^3
               V = 4/3 *pi*0.15^3 m3

               V = 0.0141371669412 m^3

now the value of P1*V1 = 0.100*170 = 17 atm m^3

   for ballon p*v = 1.25*0.0141371669412 m3.atm

           = 0.0176714586765 m3 .atm

now the number of ballons balloons can be inflated by opening the valve at the top of the tank is

               17 / 0.0176714586765 = 962.00

Ans is 192 ballons
