when white light passes through a gas and then passed through a prism, some colours are missing as they are absorbed by the gas and this property is used in spectrometry to determine an unknown element .

for most elements, emission and absorption are the strongest at a certain temperature. Helium absorpiton lines occur only at very high temperature and this property is used for determining temperature of a star and stars are categorized on the basis of temperature.

O type stars with temperature between 28000 K -50000 K are the ones who show absorption lines of ionized helium.
