One afternoon you start from your home at 2:45pm and walk 235m south to class. Then when class is over, you walk 375m to west to get ice cream arriving at ice-cream place at 4:45pm.

a.) what is the magnitude and angle of your displacement?

b.) what is the magnitude of your average velocity fro when you leave your home until you get to the ice cream place?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

here,

the first displacement , s1 = 235 (-j) m

the second displacement , s2 = 375 (-i) m

a)

the magnitude of net displacement , s = sqrt(s1^2 + s2^2)

s = sqrt(235^2 + 375^2) m = 442.5 m

the direction of displacement , theta = arctan(235/375)

theta = 32.1 degree South of West

b)

total time taken , t = 2 hrs = 7200 s

the magnitude of average velocity , v = s /t

v = 442.5 /7200 m/s = 6.15 * 10^-2 m/s

the direction of velocity is same as the direction of displacement i.e 32.1 degree South of West
