A water tank springs a leak.

Find the speed of water emerging from the hole if the leak is 2.9 m below the surface of the water, which is open to the atmosphere.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Gravitational acceleration = g = 9.81 m/s2

Density of water = = 1000 kg/m3

Atmospheric pressure = Patm

Pressure of the water at the top of the tank = P1 = Patm (Open to atmosphere)

Pressure of the water coming out from the hole = P2 = Patm (Open to atmosphere)

Height of the surface of the water above the hole = H = 2.9 m

Speed of water emerging from the hole = V

The speed of water at the top of the tank will be nearly zero as the area of the tank is much larger than the area of the hole.

By Bernoulli's equation at the top of the water tank and the hole,

V = 7.54 m/s

Speed of the water emerging from the hole = 7.54 m/s
