How would you calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction given the mass the object, the distance it takes for the velocity to reach zero, and the original velocity?

Answer #1

We can use the principle of conservation of energy to calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction. First we will be calculating the amount of work done by the Frictional force by calculating the change in kinetic energy (Work energy theorem), and then we can calculate the coefficient of friction by calculating the Frictional force (here distance is given). First we will calculate the amount of work done,

(We are considering that the initial velocity of the body is v)

We can write the work done as,

(Here x is the distance it takes for the velocity to become 0 and the N is the normal reaction force), Substituting values we can calculate the value of coefficient of kinetic friction as,
