Explain how a good thermos slows the flow of heat, Q/t, in terms of conduction, convection, and radiation.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

there are three modes of heat transfer that takes place namely conduction convection and radiation.

Convection : for reduction of heat lost due to convection, the space between inner wall and outer wall of thermos are generally made vacuum.

Radiation : The inner walls of the thermos are made silver in color which reduces the radiation losses.

Conduction : The inner walls are made by glass so as to reduce the heat lost by conduction as glass is bad conductor of heat

a) State with an example how conduction is different from convection and radiation? b) A hot steam engine as shown bee, consumes 800 KW of fuel while burning at a temperature of 700 K it produces 200 KW of power and rejects 600KW of heat at 400K. By applying the laws of thermodynamics, calculate and investigate if this operation is even possible. Please answer both the parts. Thank you!

We have been learning Heat Transfer for the whole semester and now are close to the end.  A good way to help you review all the topics and contents we've learned is to describe in your words how do you analyze or solve a general heat transfer problem. You may use a flow chart or write down a paragraph to describe the general methodology to solve heat transfer problems. For example, given a problem, the first thing is to determine whether...

For the human body, what is the rate of heat transfer by conduction (in kJ/day) through the body's tissue with the following conditions: the tissue thickness is 2.90 cm, the change in temperature is 2.04°C, and the skin area is 1.35 m2. ________ kJ/day How does this compare with the average heat transfer rate to the body resulting from an energy intake of about 2400 kcal per day? (No exercise is included.) Fraction of (Q/t)conduction and (Q/t)food intake. _____________
