Wrongly called for a foul, an angry basketball player throws the ball straight down to the floor.

Part A

If the ball bounces straight up and returns to the floor 2.5s after first striking it, what was the ball's greatest height above the floor?

Express your answer using two significant figures.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution-:

Given data,

total time taken for the ball isT = 2.5s
At maximum height velocity v = 0
From the equation of kinematics
v = u + at
0 = u - gt
t = u /g
Then total time taken for the ball bounces straight up and
returns to the floor is
T = 2t
= 2u/g
u = Tg / 2

Here , T = 2.5 s
u = (2.5 s)(9.8m/s^2) / 2
u = 12.25 m/s
So , from the equation of kinematics
v^2 - u^2 = 2as
0 - u^2 = -2gH
H = u^2 / 2g
H= (12.25 m/s)^2 / 2(9.8m/s^2)
H = 7.65 m (Answer)

I hope help you !!
