Discuss the cases at which a leakage of radiation has been
detected around the
nuclear fission reactor and why?
Discuss the probability of the neutron interaction with the
matter and when it
can cause a fission reaction.
Fukushima nuclear reactor in Japan was shut down in the year 2011 due to radiation leakage. it was a nuclear fission reactor and the leakage of radiation causes massive radiation contamination in surrounding area.
A similar nuclear diaster took place in chernobyl nuclear reactor, Russia in 1986.
In all the cases, the reactor core is damaged and significant amount of radioactive isotopes are released.
A neutron is electrically neutral and its interaction with matter is weak so that it can penetrate deeply.
Neutrons with thermal energies of about 0.025 eV can cause a nuclear fission. Fast nutrons with energy about 2 MeV can not cause nuclear fission as these neutrons penetrates through and the target nucleus can not absorb the neutron.
