If U-238 splits into two even pieces , and each piece emits an alpha particle , what are the remaining products?

Answer #1

SOLUTION:

We are gonna do simple math here!

We have, U-238 -> Uranium-238

  • Uranium has 92 protons and 146 neutrons.

Given that U-238 splits into 2 even pieces, which will have:

  • 92/2 protons = 46 protons
  • 146/2 neutrons = 73 neutrons.

Now each piece emits an alpha particle which is basically an helium atom with 2 protons and 2 neutrons.

Hence our remaining product will have:

  • 46 protons - 2 protons = 44 protons.
  • 73 neutrons - 2 neutrons = 71 neutrons

From period table, element with 44 protons (atomic number = 44) is Ruthenium (Ru).

Hence the remaining product will be  .
