A patron and the north pole magnet are placed near each other. The force of attraction is?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

SOLUTION:

There are certain forces of attraction in the nature:

  • Magnetic force (either attraction or repulsion) - between magnetic dipoles.
  • Gravitational force (attraction only) - between two masses.
  • Nuclear force (attraction only) - between nucleons in nucleus.
  • Electrostatic force (either attraction or repulsion) - between charges.

These all forces depends on the nature of objects.

Here, the two objects (north pole of a magnet and a patron) are two objects with masses. Both are neutral in terms of charges, only one have a magnetic dipole (both needs to have mag. dipole for a magnetic force).

Hence, the force of attraction between them is Gravitational force of attraction.

At the equator, the earth’s field is essentially horizontal; near the north pole, it is nearly vertical. In between, the angle varies. As you move farther north, the dip angle, the angle of the earth’s field below horizontal, steadily increases. Green turtles seem to use this dip angle to determine their latitude. Suppose you are a researcher wanting to test this idea. You have gathered green turtle hatchlings from a beach where the magnetic field strength is 50μT and the...
