ch. 24 Q 7 .) Intelligent beings in a distant galaxy send a signal to earth in the form of an electromagnetic wave. The frequency of the signal observed on earth is 2.8% greater than the frequency emitted by the source in the distant galaxy. What is the speed Vrel of the galaxy relative to the earth?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Using relativistic Doppler effect we have

fs is the frequency of the source, fr is the frequency as received. v is the velocity of the galaxy relative to earth and c is the velocity of light

Frequency of signal as observed on earth is 2.8% greater than that emitted by source i.e.,

Squaring both sides,

This is the velocity of the galaxy.

A distant galaxy is simultaneously rotating and receding from the earth. As the drawing shows, the galactic center is receding from the earth at a relative speed of uG = 1.60 × 106 m/s. Relative to the center, the tangential speed is vT = 0.580 × 106 m/s for locations A and B, which are equidistant from the center. Consider a spiral galaxy that is moving directly away from Earth with a speed V = 3.040×105 m/s at its center, as shown in the figure(Figure 1).
