GROUP REPORT ANALYSIS:

Only one report shall be handed in for each group. The lab number and name shall be on the report along with your instructor’s name and the lab section. Include every group member’s name on the report.

Data

A recording of the temperature be sure to (include units) shall be noted from Step 3, along with your calculation for the speed of sound in air. Provide a succinct description of what you did in the lab for Steps 3–9. Your description should be no more than five sentences. Summarize your measured data from Steps 4–9 in a table (for example as shown below). Separately show your calculations for all tuning forks, including tuning fork frequency and theoretical prediction of water level (Steps 4–9).

Room Temperature: 290 K
Accepted value for speed of sound in air (v): _____________

Tuning Fork 1

Tuning Fork 2

Tuning Fork 3

ffork (__)

X1 (__)

X2 (__)

λ (__)

vsound (__)

  1. Name the different factors necessary for resonance and a standing wave in this apparatus. You may want to draw a sketch with proper labeling.

  1. If both ends of the tube were closed (i.e. fixed and rigid), sketch the standing wave and identify the nodes and antinodes for the displacement wave. Be careful with the boundary conditions and do not draw the pressure wave if that is how it is taught in class, we want the displacement wave here.
  1. Do you think the diameter affects the resonance? Does it impact the quality of the sound? Think about the speakers on a stereo as an analogous case.
  1. Can you explain any sources of error? Can you measure water level perfectly? Do the tuning forks perfectly match their frequency to what is marked? Please identify more sources of error possibilities as well by reviewing what you have measured and recorded.
  1. Provide a qualitative assessment of the accuracy of your results given the sources of error in the previous set of questions. Were your results reasonably close or way off? Postulate how you may be able improve the accuracy of the experimental results.

Ambient temperature is 17 degrees celsius.

For 320 Hz:

L1 ~ 26 cm

L2 ~ 79.5 cm

For 480 Hz:

L1 ~ 17 cm

L2 ~ 52.5 cm

For 520 Hz:

L1 ~ 16 cm

L2 ~ 48.5 cm

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Possible sources of errors

* Parallex error in taking the reading of water level

* Frequency of the tuning fork may altered due to wear and tear, due surrounding temperature

* Any other random error

As you saw from the lab PowerPoint slides last week, you will be doing a research study looking at ‘Aggression Priming” for your first paper. For this week’s discussion, I want you to discuss with your group what you think this study is about. What is the hypothesis? What theory does it come from? What do you predict will happen (do you expect something different than the hypothesis in the researcher instructions? If so, what and why?)? Do you think...
