Why is it possible for galaxies to merge but not stars?

Why is it possible for galaxies to merge but not stars?

Answer #1

The reason for merge is High velocity collision,

A we know space is very large and there is very large space for stars so they can move without colliding with each other, they are actually very far away to each other.

but for galaxies, galaxies are held together by mutual gravitational force between them and they move around a common center and this leads to collision between galaxies and they merge with eachother and due to this collision many new stars formed.

Why do elliptical galaxies appear red in color? a) Their blue stars are too dim to be resolved by telescopes. b) They don't have enough gas to form new stars. c) Only low-mass red stars can form in ellipticals. d) They are all moving away from the Milky Way at high speeds and their light is red shifted.

We theorize that all galaxies form from the gravitational contraction of gas clouds (like stars, but on a larger scale). If galaxies form in this way, which one must be true about galaxies? a) Galaxies will never cluster together. b) Low-mass galaxies are more numerous than high-mass galaxies. c) Galaxies are always as large, or larger than the Milky Way. d) Most galaxies must be irregular galaxies.

1.Elliptical galaxies tend to be redder in colour than spiral galaxies. Why is this? Question 10 options: A.The dust in spiral galaxies preferentially reflects blue light making the galaxy look bluer B.Elliptical galaxies have more dust which reddens the light from them. C.Elliptical galaxies have no star formation and are made of cooler, older stars. D.Elliptical galaxies are farther away so their light is red shifted more 2. Stars and galaxies in the distance universe are receding from us with a speed proportional to their distance away, v = Hr, where H ≈ 73 m/s/Mpc is the Hubble constant. (a) What is the value of H in SI units? SR units? (Mpc = Mega parsec.) (b) Because they are receding from us, light received from distant stars will be red-shifted. It is common to define the dimensionless red-shift parameter z as λ/λ0 ≡ 1 + z. There is...
