Why is static friction stronger than kinetic friction? Find examples of something where two values are very similar and explain conditions where this is likely to happen.
Static friction is stronger than kinetic friction because a lot of energy is needed to start moving an object. When an object is stationary on a surface, the surface will have microscopic asperities and roughness, so a greater force of friction is acting on it and we need to apply a force greater than this friction force to move the object.
Further, smoother the object and the smoother the surface, the smaller the difference between the amount of static friction and the amount of kinetic friction.
For example - during ice skating, the static friction is very less and kinetic friction is also approximately the same as static friction.
