Course Learning Outcome being addressed (CLO2):

Utilize concepts of Newtonian mechanics and make simple statements about processes at elastic impacts

Investigate the change from potential to kinetic energy (conservation of energy).

Material needed

Part A

1X track and optical

bench, 2X50 cm

1X rail bond

1X support road, round,

L=60 mm

2X trolley with variable

speed

2X dynamics trolley

4X slotted weight (50g)

1X sliding saddle with

setscrew

2X springs bumpers

PART A: Principle of Linear Momentum

Arrange the setup as shown in Figure 1. A trolley is provided with a buffer string and placed at one end of the track. One of the sliding saddles serves as a ‘rigid wall’ into which a trolley runs

Figure 1

The trolley is moved to one end of the track and is set in motion towards the sliding saddle at the other end of the track. The trolley hits the sliding saddle. Compare the speed of the trolley before and after the impact.

Two trolley provided with buffer springs are moved towards each other so that they meet approximately in the middle of the track. The speeds of the two trolleys should be about the same (but in opposite directions). What happens to their speeds?

Two trolleys are provided with a buffer spring and slotted masses (each 50g). One trolley is placed in the middle of the track and the other trolley rolls towards the first one and hits it. Compare the speed before and after the impact, by estimation.

One trolley is loaded with four slotted masses, the other one is not loaded. The trolley with no load is to be kept at rest and the one with load is to be pushed against it. What happens after the impact to both of the trolleys?

Now keep the trolley with load at rest and push the unloaded trolley towards it. What happens after the impact to both of the trolleys?

Define Impulse. How does Impulse compare, before and after a compact?
