Using the diagram below indicate with an arrow the direction of the force on the electron and

its path. (note: the plus signs indicate that the magnetic field is into the page, the arrow indicates

the direction of Motion of the electron)

Answer #1

The direction of force on the electron is given by the right hand rule.

The right hand rule states that: to determine the direction of the magnetic force on a positive moving charge, ƒ, point the thumb of the right hand in the direction of v, the fingers in the direction of B, and a perpendicular to the palm points in the direction of F. The direction of the force F on a negative charge is in the opposite sense to that above (so pointed away from the back of your hand).

Thus the direction of the force here is downward.

f an electron moves in a magnetic field, it always feels a force. it only feels a force if its velocity vector is parallel (or antiparallel) to the direction of the magnetic field. it only feels a force if its velocity vector is not parallel (or antiparallel) to the direction of the magnetic field. it does not feel a force if it is in motion, only if stationary.
