An object with a mass of 34g and a volume of 36cm^3 is placed in a liquid with a density of 1.25 g/cm^3. find the volume of the part of the object that is not submerged in the liquid in cm^3 with 3 significant figures.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

m = 34 g

V = Volume = 36 cm2

= density of liquid= 1.25 g/cm3

weight of the object is given as ::

W = mg = 0.034 x 9.8 = 0.3332 N

the weight of the object is balanced by the force of buoyancy by liquid

Let V' be the Volume of object inside the liquid, then

force of buoyancy is given as ::

Fb = V' g

for object to float :

Fb = W

V' g = mg

1.25 V' = 34

V' = 27.2 cm3

Volume outside the liquid = Total volume - Volume inside

Voutside = 36 - 27.2

Voutside = 8.80 cm3
