5. Rutherford scattered a parallel beam of α particles with fixed kinetic energy from a gold foil and compared the distribution to that expected from pure Coulomb scattering. What did he observe and what was he able to conclude from his data?

Answer #1

In the Rutherford alpha particle experiment, following observations were made

* most of the alpha particles goes through with least deviation through the gold foil

* A few Particles are found be deviated with great angles from their path.

* Very few particles are found to deflect back.

Based on above observations, it was concluded that, the entire positive charge of the atom is in a very tiny place called nucleus, that's why only few alpha particle which gets chance to hit directly to the nucleus are deflected back.

Most of the space of atom is empty, that's why most of the alpha particles goes with least deflection.

In Rutherford's scattering experiment, alpha particles (m = 6.68 x 10-27 kg, q = +2e) of 7.5 MeV kinetic energy were aimed at a thin gold foil (Z = 79). Some of the alpha particles scattered straight back: 180 degrees. From this data, what is his estimate for the size of the gold nucleus?

Each alpha particle in a beam of alpha particles has a kinetic energy of 5.0 MeV. Through what potential difference would you have to accelerate these alpha particles in order that they would have enough energy so that if one is fired head-on at a gold nucleus it could reach a point 1.0x10^-14 m from the center of the nucleus? In order to investigate the structure of atoms, Ernest Rutherford performed his famous experiment, in which he bombarded gold atoms with alpha particles and studied the scattering of the alpha particles. Imagine that an alpha particle (a helium nucleus, consisting of two protons and two neutrons) is initially moving along the x-axis in the positive direction straight toward an initially stationary gold nucleus (containing 79 protons and 118 neutrons) and all subsequent motion takes place along the x-axis. The alpha...
