In a ballistic pendulum, a spring gun, with a spring constant k, is aimed horizontally releasing a spring that has been compressed a distance x. A ball of mass m is fired at the bob of a pendulum. The bob (cup) has a mass M, and is suspended by a rod of negligible mass. After the collision, the ball stays inside the cup of the bob and swings through an arc, eventually gaining a height h. (a) Find the height in terms of the given variables. (b) If a 10.0 g bullet is fired into a ballistic pendulum whose bob has a mass of 1.00 kg, determine the initial speed V that would cause the bob to rise to a height of 15.0 cm.

A block of clay is suspended as part of a ballistic pendulum. You have a gun that uses compressed air to fire a small 5.00 g ball into the clay. As you change the pressure of the air used to fire the ball, you can adjust the speed of the ball as it emerges from the gun. You fire the ball into the clay at a series of known speeds and measure the height to which the clay rises after...
