Answer #1

Solution:

For a block of ice to vaporizer,

Energy required to vaporize an ice cube = Heat released going from -10oC to 0oC + Phase chance from ice to water + Heat released by water from 0oC to 100oC + Phase change of water to vapour

= 2.04*103 J/kgK* [0o - 10oC] + 335*103 J/kg + 4180 J/kg-K*[100oC - 0oC] + 2,260*103J/kg

= 2.04*104 + 335*103 + 4180*102 + 2260*103

= 3033400 J/kg

= 3.03*105 J/kg.

It’s a common sight in science fiction movies, shows, and books to see someone have a weapon that can vaporize anything. The question is though, how much energy does this take. Let’s consider an object vaporized once it has fully entered a gaseous state. If they’re trying to destroy a 5 kg block of solid aluminum, how much energy would it take? Note: you’ll need to look up and state all constants used for this calculations.
