What is the difference between LS coupling and JJ coupling?
In atoms , consider two electrons , each with an angular momentum l1 , spin s1 and angular momentum l2 and spin s2, to get resultant spectrum coupling them can be in two ways
a) couple l1 and l2 to L, and s1 and s2 to S, to get resultant L and S and then couple L with S .This is LS coupling
b) couple l1 and s1 to j1, and l2 and s2 to j2, and then couple j1 and j2 to get resultant J This is JJ coupling .
If electrons are close enough then LS coupling is used if they are far then JJ coupling is used
