A capacitor with an unknown capacitance is charged up to a voltage of V1 = 14.3 V using a battery. The capacitor is then disconnected from the battery, and the battery is taken away. This capacitor is then connected to a second capacitor with terminal A to terminal A, and terminal B to terminal B. The second capacitor has a capacitance of C2 = 8.16 mF. This second capacitor didn’t have any electric charge on it before the connections were made. After sufficiently long time the common voltage is measured across the capacitors and it is found to be Vcomm = 8.53 V. What is the capacitance of the first capacitor?

Learning Goal: To understand how to calculate capacitance, voltage, and charge for a combination of capacitors connected in series. Consider the combination of capacitors shown in the figure.(Figure 1) Three capacitors are connected to each other in series, and then to the battery. The values of the capacitances are C, 2C, and 3C, and the applied voltage is ?V. Initially, all of the capacitors are completely discharged; after the battery is connected, the charge on plate 1 is Q Part...
