The ends of a trough are isoceles trapezoids. The top of the trough is 5m across and the bottom is 1m; it is 2m deep. If the trough is filled to 1m with water, what is the hydrostatic force due to the water pressure on one end of the trough?
Hydro static force is given as
F = Ahg
A= area of the surface of trough= (5+1) x 2/2 = 6 m2
h = Total height of trough / 2 = 2/2 =1m
Hydrostatic force is supposed to act at a height H/2 from the surface of water where H is the depth of water
So, F = 6 x 1 x1000 x 9.81 N = 58.86 kN
