After a 90-kg person steps from a boat onto the shore, the boat moves away with a speed of 0.60 m/s with respect to the shore. If the same person steps from the shore onto the boat, the person and the boat move away from the shore with the speed of 0.40 m/s. Assume that the initial speed of the person with respect to the shore is the same in both cases and that the person is moving in a horizontal direction. Determine the mass of the boat. Determine the speed of the person.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Mass of person is   mass of boat is .

Conserving momentum of boat and person when the person steps from boat onto shore,

( initial momentum is zero)

( negative sign indicates the boat moves away from shore)

--------(1)

Now the person is stepping onto boat from shore with the same speed , after the person gets into boat, both are moving at speed

Again conserving the momentum of boat and person,

---------(2)

From (1) and (2)

Mass of boat is

from (1)

Speed of person is

You have a small boat which travels through water at a speed of 6.0 m/s. You take it out on a section of a local river where the water flows from north to south at a speed of 4.0 m/s. (a) First, you head south (i.e. downstream) in your boat.
