Answer #1

1.  Some kinds of energies are thermal energy, radiant energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, electrical energy, motion energy, sound energy, elastic energy and gravitational energy etc.

2. Potential energy is defined as any type of energy of a system which is due to specific position of particles present in the system. Besides gravitational and elastic energy there is potential energy between two charges due to electrostatic attraction, known as electric potential energy. Furthermore in thermodynamic system, enthalpy is also a form of potential energy which is defined as the total energy of the system due to specific position and orientation of the particles present in that system. In chemicals there is chemical potential energy. In nucleus we have nuclear potential energy due to nuclear forces.

From this week's lab you learned that the change in gravitational potential energy of a falling body can be captured and stored as a rotational kinetic energy of a spinning disk. This gave you the idea of a regenerative driver for an elevator in a tall building. When an elevator goes down the corresponding change in the gravitational potential energy of the elevator is transformed into the rotational kinetic energy of a solid disk-shape flywheel which can be extracted and...
