3) An aluminum bar and a steel bar at both 4.2 meters length at 20 degrees Celsius. What will be their new length when both of them are heated to 170 degrees of Celsius? If this was a bimetallic strip, at which direction would it bend to.

Answer #1

Linear expansion coefficient of aluminium bar is

And for steel it is

so change in length due to thermal expansion we write

So T_2 = 170°C

T1 = 20°C we get

Lf = 4.2138 m

Similarly for steel

We get,

Lf = 4.20693 m

So as we can see change in length of steel is less than aluminium so bimetallic strip bend toward steel.

At 20∘C, the hole in an aluminum ring is 2.200 cm in diameter. You need to slip this ring over a steel shaft that has a room-temperature diameter of 2.204 cm . To what common temperature should the ring and the shaft be heated so that the ring will just fit onto the shaft? Coefficients of linear thermal expansion of steel and aluminum are 12×10-6K-1 and 23×10-6K-1 respectively. Express your answer in degrees Celsius to two significant figures.

Please do not attempt to solve if you can not answer all!!! THE ENERGY BAR INDUSTRY In 1986, PowerBar, a firm in Berkeley, California, single-handedly created the energy bar category. Positioned as an athletic energy food, it was distributed at bike shops and events that usually involved running or biking. The target segment was the athlete who needed an efficient, effective energy source. Six years later, seeking to provide an alternative to the sticky, dry nature of the PowerBar, a...
