8) A 0.280 kg glider moving at a 0.900 ?̂ m/s on horizontal
track collides elastically with a second glider initially at rest.
After the collision the velocity of the first glider is a
0.240 ?̂ m/s. What is the mass of the second glider?
here,
mass of glider 1, m1 = 0.28 kg
initial velocity of 1 , u1 = 0.9 i m/s
final velocity of 1 , v1 = 0.24 i m/s
mass of glider 2 be m2
let the final velocity of 2 be v2
using conservation of momentum
m1 * u1 = m1 * v1 + m2 * v2
0.28 * 0.9 = 0.28 * 0.24 + m2 * v2 .....(1)
and
using conservation of kinetic energy
0.5 * m1 * u1^2 = 0.5 * m1 * v1^2 + 0.5 * m2 * v2^2
0.28 * 0.9^2 = 0.28 * 0.24^2 + m2 * v2^2 .....(2)
from (1) and (2)
m2 = 0.16 kg
v2 = 1.14 i m/s
the mass of second glider is 0.16 kg
