45 g horizontal metal bar, 11 cm long is free to slide up and down between two tall, vertical metal rods 10 cm apart. The magnetic field, B, is directed perpendicular to the plane of the rods. The bar is raised to near the top of the rods and a 2.4 Ω resistor is connected across the two sides at the top. Then the bar is dropped. If the terminal velocity of the bar is 3000 m/s, what magnetic field (magnitude and direction) is required to produce this terminal velocity? Assume the bar remains horizontal and in contact with the rods.

Two parallel metal rods form a plane inclined at 20.0° to the horizontal. The upper end of the rods are connected together by a resistor of 146.0 ?. The lower end of the rods are held in an electrically insulating block. They are separated horizontally by a distance of 20.0 cm. There is a uniform magnetic field of 0.100 T directed vertically upward. A metal bar of mass 0.10 g is sliding down the metal rods. What is the maximum...

As shown in the figure below, a metal rod is pulled to the right at constant speed v, perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field directed out of the screen. The bar rides on frictionless metal rails connected through a resistor forming a complete circuit. The length of the bar between the rails is 5 cm, the magnitude of the magnetic field is 0.4 T, the resistor has a value of 10 Ω, and the speed of the bar to the...

A 5.0 cm long, 53 grams, thin metal strip is allowed to slide along two parallel rails (that contact it at its ends). A constant 0.76 T magnetic field acts perpendicular to the two rails. If the strip is pulled with a speed of 17.8 m/s an the rails are connected to each other through a 20 omega resistor, then find the induced current in the circuit. Assume that the rod and rails have negligible resistance.

Problem 1. Two horizontal parallel conducting rods are connected such that a conducting crossbar free to slide along them has a constant current I running through it (Fig. P27.34). The rods are separated by a distance l and are in an external uniform magnetic field of magnitude B directed out of the page. The crossbar has a length l and mass m. (a) In which direction will the magnetic force accelerate the crossbar? (b) If the coefficient of static friction...

A 54-cm-long, 500 g bar rotates in a horizontal plane on an axle that passes through the center of the bar. Compressed air is fed in through the axle, passes through a small hole down the length of the bar, and escapes as air jets from holes at the ends of the bar. The jets are perpendicular to the bar's axis. Starting from rest, the bar spins up to an angular velocity of 200 rpm at the end of 12...
