A massive spinning wheel can be used for a stabilizing effect on a ship. If the wheel is mounted at right angles to the deck, what is its effect when the ship tends to roll from side to side?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The angle by which the ship tends to roll from side to side depends inversely on the angular momentum of the massive spinning wheel on the ship. Therefore, the large angular momentum of the massive wheel ensures that it becomes harder for any external torque to rotate the ships sideways thereby giving the ship a stabilizing effect.

Mathematically, the angle say (θ) by which any external torque would rotate the ship sideways is given as:

A 2.1 kg mouse, when running in a free spinning exercise wheel with a diameter of 7.0 cm and mass of 3.0 kg, can reach a maximum speed of 5.0 m/s. If it takes 42 revolutions of the exercise wheel for the mouse to reach its maximum speed, then what is the angular force that the mouse is applying to the exercise wheel as it runs?

Roulette is a game of chance that involves spinning a wheel that is divided into 38 equal segments, as shown in the accompanying picture. An image of a roulette wheel is shown. Text to the side of the image reads "©Anna Baburkina/Shutterstock.com." A metal ball is tossed into the wheel as it is spinning, and the ball eventually lands in one of the 38 segments. Each segment has an associated color. Two segments are green. Half of the other 36...

A drill is used to spin a wheel that begins from rest for two seconds. Then while the wheel is still spinning, it is placed on the ground at the bottom of a hill. The idea is to find out how far up the hill the wheel will go. The drill exerts a force of 15-Nm, we'll assume that there is NO energy lost due to friction or air resistance. The wheel in question will be treated as a solid...

A 1.29-kg grinding wheel 26.3 cm in diameter (you can model it as a uniform circular thin disk) is spinning counterclockwise at a rate of 802.3 revolutions per second about its symmetry axis. When the power to the grinder is turned off, the grinding wheel slows with constant angular acceleration and takes 34.2 s to come to a rest. What was the absolute value of work (in unit of J) done by the net external torque on the grinding wheel...

A demonstration gyroscope wheel is constructed by removing the tire from a bicycle wheel 0.660 min diameter, wrapping lead wire around the rim, and taping it in place. The shaft projects 0.205 mat each side of the wheel, and a woman holds the ends of the shaft in her hands. The mass of the system is 7.00 kg ; its entire mass may be assumed to be located at its rim. The shaft is horizontal, and the wheel is spinning...

Been working on this one for a while - and can only get through part A... for part B, I am trying 44.1+(28.836)(4.8x10-2x2pi)=52.8 and 44.1-(28.836)(4.8x10-2x2pi)=28.18 --> it keeps marking this wrong. Flywheels are large, massive wheels used to store energy. They can be spun up slowly, then the wheel's energy can be released quickly to accomplish a task that demands high power. An industrial flywheel has a 1.8 m diameter and a mass of 220 kg . Its maximum angular velocity is 1600 rpm . Part A A motor spins up the flywheel with a constant torque of 57 N?m . How long does it take the flywheel to reach top...

A freewheel is a wheel with a hub which can rotate freely in one direction, but must rotate with a gear in the other. The gear can be thought of as "floating" in one direction and "catching" in the other. One example that most are familiar with is a bicycle wheel, though many other mechanical devices use freewheels, such as wind turbines, hydraulic turbines, grandfather clocks, and other gravity-powered objects. A freewheel with negligible mass spokes has a mass of...

Cloud computing generates massive amount of carbon footprint from data centers used to achieve the cloud computing architecture. Suppose the state government now want to regulate carbon emission generated from cloud computing services, with the goal of reducing 40% of carbon emissions from the unregulated situation. There are two cloud computing companies operating in the state, Amacon Inc. and Goggle Inc., each emitting 1,000 tons of carbon per year into the atmosphere. Amacon can abate its emission with a marginal...
