You have a train carrying 1500kg of mass traveling at 15m/s down
a track
What is it’s velocity if you throw a 175kg of mass off at 5m/s in
the same direction of the train and in opposite direction of the
train
Here we have to assume that no friction acts and the velocities given are with respect to the earth's frame.
For the same direction,
The initial momentum before throwing the mass = Pi = Mass of train * Velocity of train
Momentum after throwing the mass = Pf = Mass of train * New Velocity of train + Mass * Velocity of mass
From conservation of momentum, Pi = Pf
===> 1500*15 = 1500 * v + 175*5 ====> v = 14.4166 m/s
Now for the opposite direction,
The initial momentum before throwing the mass = Pi = Mass of train * Velocity of train
Momentum after throwing the mass = Pf = Mass of train * New Velocity of train - Mass * Velocity of mass
From conservation of momentum, Pi = Pf
===> 1500*15 = 1500 * v - 175*5 ====> v = 15.5833 m/s
